Hi there, I have a 2004 focus 1.6 tdci and the car won't crank and start. The immobiliser flash stay on, says engine malfunction. The battery lamp and the oil lamp won't flash. I replaced the instrument cluster 3 times and reperad it. sometimes when I turn the key on and off several times it's starts and runns fine.
Milton. I'm just purely guessing that once your car starts the fuel pump is unable to supply enough fuel to keep it running. This forum has numerous reports of pumps going south after not being used for a long time. Ideally you would test this by attaching a fuel pump gauge and watch the fuel pressure as it starts and then dies.

As the cambelt had to come off to do so I also replaced the pulley and tensioner as well as the cambelt. This was all replaced and locked/timed throughout as per autodata. I have tried to start the car but without auxiliary belt connected

Hi guys I have just read the whole thread very interesting. The reason I'm posting is I decided this morning to change the fuel filter on my 1.6 TDCi Focus I have had it from new I do about 3K miles a year and it's done 55K and this is its first fuel filter change, I followed everything in my Haynes manual and filled the new filter with fresh diesel and used a Vaccum pump to pull the fuel
Yes had a similar issue for many many months where as the coolant temperature would sometimes reach halfway (82-84c) then drop again to 1/4 (76-77c) then sometimes stay at 1/2 all day or never get to 1/2. When at 1/2 on the gauge the car ran smoother/quieter and the transmission shifted better as it's temp is related to the coolant more.
